Guam will move into Condition of Readiness 3 at 7pm

At 7 o’clock tonight, Governor Eddie Calvo and Joint Region Marianas Commander Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield anticipate placing Guam and local military bases in Condition of Readiness (COR) 3. This means that damaging winds of 39-57mph are anticipated within 48 hours; however damaging winds are expected as early as Monday evening.

Additionally, the National Weather Service is anticipating issuing a typhoon watch for the Marianas this evening. A typhoon watch means typhoon strength winds of at least 74mph are possible within 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Mangkhut is now expected to make its closest point of approach to Guam at around 12:00 noon on Tuesday in the form of a Category 2 or Category 3 typhoon. However island residents are urged to prepare now for the worst case scenario of at Category 4 typhoon.

A Category 4 Typhoon is referred to as a “Very Strong Typhoon” with maximum sustained winds of 130-156 and peak gusts of 165-198 mph. During a heavy weather briefing the NWS warned that the CPA could change but Tuesday will be a rough day for Guam. NWS meteorologist Landon Aydelett says this could be the worst hit for Guam in about 15 years.

Guam Homeland Security/ Office Civil Defense warns that although the storm’s CPA is forecast for Tuesday, Guam and the Marianas can expect damaging winds of 39 mph or more as early as Monday around 11 p.m.
