Apuron remains suspended during appeal

Posted: Jun 14, 2018 2:58 PM Updated:

It's status quo for Guam's suspended Archbishop Anthony Apuron. The Archdiocese of Agana confirms they received notification from the Vatican on Apuron's appeal over a month ago.

What does this mean?

Not much - just that Apuron will remain suspended until the appeals process takes it course. Back in March, Apuron's canonical trial rendered a guilty verdict for certain accusations.

Though those charges were never specified, Apuron does stand five-times accused of clergy sexual abuse.

The Archdiocese, meanwhile, still seeks clarification from the Vatican about the appeals process, what it entails, and how long it will take.

In an earlier statement from Apuron, he maintained his innocence. "God is my witness; I am innocent and I look forward to proving my innocence in the appeals process."
