Guam hosted over 113,000 visitors in May

Multiple events held throughout Tourism Month helped to attract more visitors to the island.

The Guam Visitor’s Bureau says 113,804 visitors came to Guam, placing fifth in record visitor arrivals for May.

Arrivals from Korea are up by 17.3% compared to last year, and other markets show an increase for the month, as well.

Officials say Japan has been the most affected by the loss of seating capacity, and that the Japan market is experiencing a decline caused by the withdrawal from Delta Airlines.

“We’ve been working hard to bring in more flights and promote our island to the world,” GVB president and CEO Nate Denight said.

GVB and the Guam International Airport Authority has worked to offer regular air service support and discounted fees under an airport incentive plan in an effort to address the issue.

The result led to Jeju Air announcing the launch of its inaugural flight service this week between Japan’s Kansai International Airport and Guam beginning July 21st. Officials say this will bring 5,700 more seats to Guam per month. Japan Airlines also has a second daily flight from Narita, as a result of the initiative.

GVB also anticipates summer charter flights from July to September.
