The search to fill the shoes of retiring UOG President Underwood continues, as University of Guam stakeholders met with the only local candidate in the running.

Recently added to the top four candidates for UOG president after controversial figure Dr. Hamid Shirvani took his name out of the search, Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez is currently senior vice president of academic and student affairs at UOG. She said, "I've lived here most of my life; I've interacted with many different groups, the nonprofit organizations, farmers, the fisherman - not all of them, but certain key members of those particular areas - small businesses, government agency representatives, our political leaders, and other members of the community. I've been to just about every island in the region."

With a background in business, she says her top concern is college affordability for all students no matter their socioeconomic background. "If we're really serious about college affordability, we make sure there's opportunities for students who apply. So it's not going towards one or a handful of students but we basically spread the wealth," she stated.

Also the only female candidate, she notes her perspective on women at the collegiate level, saying, "I don't believe women are disenfranchised, but many examples of women advancing themselves. We have single moms coming back to school to serve as role models for their children we have many women here in leadership positions at the University of Guam."

Overall, she believes as an internal candidate from UOG, who's worked on community boards at the Guam Museum and Guampedia, she understands the mission of the university and the region. Said Dr. Enriquez, "To a certain extent, advocating for the underdog, but always keeping in mind how do we advance our community how do I help individuals and families advance and improve their overall quality of life."

The two remaining candidates are visiting campus. Dr. Bruce Murphy met with students, faculty, staff, and alumni Wednesday afternoon.
