A man convicted of assaulting a police officer is being transferred into the custody of the federal government for deportation.

Governor Eddie Baza Calvo on Friday signed the commutation order for VK Katson.

Katson was involved in the assault against a police officer in June 2016. Two officers had responded to a disturbance complaint at Hemlani Apartments in Harmon. An officer trying to control the crowd was hit on the head with a chair and later identified Katson as his assailant.

The 24-year-old was convicted of aggravated assault as a third-degree felony and sentenced to three years in prison. He was scheduled for release in March 2019. ?

Federal immigrations placed a detainer on Katson’s file. He is a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia. With the commutation, the detainee is transferred to federal officials who carry out the deportation process.

The cost of providing food, shelter, medical care and other necessities is about $119 a day, or more than $43,000 a year. Once commuted, the federal government picks up the financial burden of the basic needs of individuals in their custody.

?This action brings the total number of criminals whose sentences the Governor commuted for either removal or deportation to 45.
