Senators give earful to Rev & Tax officials

Rev & Tax officials got a scolding by senators at their budget hearing Wednesday. Lawmakers wanted to know why the department hasn't beefed up its tax collection and enforcement staff to help out with the government's current fiscal crisis.

Senator Michael San Nicolas said, "This was not even a year ago, when under oath your director testified that these positions will be filled if we provide the funding. And the funding was provided in the appropriation. So why isn't the money being prioritized to hire for these positions so we can bring in the hard cash to fill the shortfalls."

Several Senators expressing frustration that nine months later DRT did not keep a promise to complete the hiring within 90 days.

But Deputy Tax commissioner Paul Pablo says the recruitment process is not that simple, noting, "Even right now we have revenue officers, the time has changed where maybe the skill level or requirement maybe we need to revisit the position descriptions. Maybe the time is now.

"And I'm just offering that as real reasons why this hasn't happened. Now as far as whether real appropriations were transferred to hire them, the process itself, you hear it from other agencies, It takes a long time."

The legislature last fiscal year approved 54 new positions. Acting director Marie Benito says it was always their intent to fill them. She says five have already been hired, and the interview and selection process is continuing.

Senators say if Rev & Tax improves enforcement and collection they could bring in enough revenue to prevent a tax increase.
