They are the men and women sworn to protect and serve our island, and they will be out in full force throughout the community, as Police Week gets underway. A proclamation signing was held today to mark the occasion after police management held one of several town hall meetings in an effort to help curb crime happening here.

It wasn't a highly well attended discussion, but GPD leaders and officers still made the effort to get their point across...Educating whoever they can about what can be done to minimize the amount of crimes being committed. GPD Sergeant Paul Tapao said, "We are bringing forward now some of the crimes and some of the offenses that are committed within as a Pacific Island Region. We are trying to break the barrier between culture and western law in helping educate our community, or FSM family members in helping to understand that yes we respect the culture but you also have to understand we are in a western world and we have laws that need to be followed."

The FSM - FAS town hall meeting was held at the Dededo Senior Center Thursday night. GPD partnering with the Micronesian Resource Center to discuss Guam's law and crime rates.

Acting GPD commander Manny Chong said, "Maybe the reason why a lot of crimes are being committed is because maybe they don't know that it's wrong." That point was well understood by the handful that did show up.

Dededo mayor Melissa Savares even sharing a recent report she came across with a woman in her village who opened up that she was being abused by her spouse. "We asked her do you want to make a report. The problem is security. The families that they live with are the spouses' family and she's afraid that if she does file something. We told her she could be protected in shelters available," she said.

The top brass responding, saying, "If she feels she is a victim of violence we can respond and talk to her and then we can be the reporting person to take that fear and assure its GPD that steps in because that's how the law is written."

Steps and procedures in place Chief of Police JI Cruz points out, so that everyone can help to keep the community safe. "We truly believe it's going to take the community as a while to address this," he said.
