Gubernatorial teams grilled by women's group

Posted: Updated:

It was one of the first gubernatorial candidate forums to occur. Three of the five teams who have publicly announced their run for Adelup were in the hot seat, answering questions in a room filled with women.

The race is definitely on. Going before the American Association of University Women's Guam chapter... The teams of Tenorio/Ada, Leon Guerrero/Tenorio, and Aguon/Limtiaco. Candidates questioned on a number of issues dealing with public safety, health, and education.

Alicia Limtiaco said, "We must stand together, raise our voices, and take action. Senator Aguon and I are committed to and support gender pay equality."  Ray Tenorio said, "We need to make sure compensation is available, it is equal, it is not gender specific." Lou Leon Guerrero stated, "We will work to expand opportunities and remove barriers in education and through the workforce and to promote equity for all women in all segments of our community."

According to their website, AAUW's policy work connects and rallies advocates at the local, state, national, and global levels to empower women and girls. On top of asking about funding for education, the candidates were also put on the spot for federal grants, and what each of them would do to ensure monies awarded are well spent and not returned.

Leon Guerrero continued, "I think one thing we need to look at is maybe our procurement system...how we can make it more efficient, more objective and fair across the board so we can decrease the number of protests as that delays the procurement system and I also think we should work at was efficiencies in our government to make sure we don't send back the funds."

Limtiaco said, "We need to look at technology and way to look at moving to a more E-gov system to streamline the procurement process. We need to look at procurement laws and though there are ways in which a person filing or protesting frivolously can be penalized through disbnarment and other forms of penalty."

Tenorio shared, "It is a huge problem and we deal with this all the time. Inefficiencies exist within the system, it's true, reporting systems and procurement training we've been doing it for years. There is no silver bullet to this. It is not as efficient as we would like. We would like to make it better but these are function of laws."

Meanwhile, not able to attend the forum, Carl Gutierrez and Fred Bordallo along with Dennis Rodriguez Jr. and Frank Aguon Jr. Aguon was out on military duty.

Also happening this weekend, Senator Rodriguez announcing his running mate, retired air force colonel, David Cruz.
