The broadcast featured panelist Thomas J. Gould, Ph.D., the Department of Biobehavioral Health in the College of Health and Human at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Gould's research background has focused on nicotine addiction and understanding the contribution of genetics to changes in brain and behavior after nicotine exposure. He investigates the long-term impact of developmental nicotine exposure on brain and behavior, primarily examining changes in learning-related processes and in underlying brain regions. Additionally, he seeks to understand the comorbidity between nicotine exposure and anxiety disorders.

Another, panelist was Nicole Avena, Ph.D., a Research Neuroscientist at Columbia University, and a pioneer in the field of food addiction. Her seminal research work jump-started a new field of exploration in medicine and nutrition. She is an expert in diet during pregnancy and baby, toddler and childhood nutrition and has published over 70 articles, book chapters and books on topics related to food, addiction, obesity and eating disorders.

"There are natural processes and it make sense to have the cravings but other things such as drug abuse can hijack the natural processes. It corrupts them in such a way, cravings become abnormally strong and can drive the adaptive behavior," says Dr. Gould.

Cravings typically refer to the intense desire for people to drink or use drugs when they are suffering from an addiction. While, it can also refer to urges to eat sugar, certain foods, and play games on our cell phones, or even hit the gym.

"Some of the individuals develop an addictive response for foods which might not really affect their life but people with specific genes are at higher risk of developing eating disorder," says Dr. Avena.
