Uncle Sam doling out $2 billion to aide island's homeless

The federal government will spend a record $2 billion to help the homeless, and Guam will receive about $1.1 million of that for various local programs.

The Guam Homeless Coalition, under GHURA, is the lead entity. The announcement was made Friday by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

He says ending homelessness starts with "embracing a housing-first approach that relies upon proven strategies that offer permanent housing solutions to those who may otherwise be living in our shelters and on our streets."

    Man, 49, accused of forcing sex onto expectant mother

    A 49-year-old man is under arrested after he allegedly forced a pregnant woman known to him to have sex. Nickson Walter is charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct and family violence. Court documents state, police responded to a family violence complaint in Dededo earlier this week. At one point, the suspect allegedly slapped the victim, who is six months pregnant, in the face causing her to fall. The next evening, documents state, the suspect demanded the victim have sex ...

    The Guam Power Authority showed off some new equipment Friday. New boom mowers and wood chippers will be used in a new, more proactive vegetation management program. GPA is trying to stay ahead of the island's stubbornly persistent tree and shrub growth.
