Guam Olympic Surf Federation electing new leadership

Posted: Updated:

Willie Byerly ends his 13-year run as Guahan Napu President Thursday when GNI - Guam's Olympic surf federation - holds elections for officers. Also stepping down after 13 years is Vice President Greg Ikehara.

Names showing interest for the election include John Taimanglo for president, Steve Shimizu for Vice President and Frankie Perez for secretary.

Under Byerly and Ikehara's term major accomplishments include first consulting with the International Surf Association and getting Guam surf recognized as an Olympic federation locally and internationally and also helping engineer the federation's rise to voting members of the ISA.

The Byerly-Ikehara administration also fostered ISA training for Guam surfers - leading to local surfers Ken Concepcion, John Taimanglo and Greg Ikehara becoming Level 3 ISA judges - meaning they can train judges locally - saving time and money for Guam surfers. Also able to take advantage of the Guahan Napu-ISA relationship to become ISA certified coaches - Fred Mendiola, Carlo Dela Cruz, John Taimanglo and Andy Lee.

Also working with the Navy to open Magandas again for local surfers ranks as one of the outgoing admins proudest moments - right up there with helping start the island's two-longest running surf contests - the Rick's Reef Classic and the Monster Surf The Basin - running 10 years and 7 years, respectively.
