Federal grant OK'd to prevent brown tree snake from spreading

Posted: Updated:

More federal money is available to help control the brown tree snake problem. The Interior Department's Office of Insular Affairs has come up with $3.5 million to prevent the snake from spreading to Hawaii, the Northern Marianas and Micronesia.

The funds are part of a broader DOI effort to combat invasive species in the region. Interior says the brown tree snake is one of the most widely-known damaging pests. It has been blamed through the years for a large drop in Guam's bird and lizard population.

A $250,000 federal grant has also been approved to help combat the infestation here of little fire ants.
