Drone crashes at prison

Posted: Updated:

An investigation is underway at the Department of Corrections after a drone crashed at the compound Friday night, DepCor Deputy Director Kate Baltazar said. The device was found near Post 5. No other items had been found with the drone, but officials believe it could have been a test flight to possibly fly contraband into the Mangilao compound.

Investigators say there have been national reports of drones being used to smuggle contraband into prisons. Authorities are working to track down whoever could have been operating the drone. They are reviewing the surveillance video, as well.

"We recognize the advancing methods used to infiltrate corrections facilities across the country. DOC remains ever-diligent and steadfast in ensuring safety and increasing contraband interdiction," she said.

DepCor is currently investigating a couple dozen contraband incidents that happened just this year. Heightened security has since helped to stop more contraband from being smuggled into the prison.
