Research ship embarking on voyage through Marianas

A private non-profit research ship, the Schmidt Ocean Institute RV Falkor,  is docked in Guam and will soon embark on an expedition through the Marianas. Communications manager Carlie Weiner told KUAM News, "We are doing cutting-edge technology based science globally around the world and right now we are in Guam testing our brand new 4,500-meter remotely operated vehicle Subastian."

Subastian will be tested in open ocean for the first time during the expedition, and will be used to collect footage, biological, and ecological materials. Weiner said the Falkor has conducted several expeditions near Guam in the past, and found the world's deepest fish in 2014.

It heads out to sea on the first of several expeditions on July 19.
