Guam - The detainee who was pronounced dead just hours after his arrest on Sunday has been identified as 27-year-old Jason Eliam.

According to chief medical examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola, the cause of death was asphyxia due to hanging.

Eliam was found unconscious in his holding cell at the Dededo Precinct with his shoelaces tied around his neck. He was then transported to the Guam Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

Criminal investigations and internal affairs are conducting separate investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, GPD is also reviewing its arrest and holding protocols.
