Guam - Gupot Fanaha'aniyan Pulan Chamoru, also known as the Chamorro Lunar Calendar Festival, will be celebrating the Chamorro heritage and its close relation to the phases of the moon. The event will take place next Saturday at the Saggan Kottura above the Hilton Resort.

Festival coordinator John Calvo told KUAM News, "[The event] is to celebrate all the work that's been done on the Chamorro lunar calendar." He said his committee has worked to identify each phase of the moon with a specific Chamorro name, which will then be featured on the calendar along with local artwork that has been vetted from thousands of entries submitted during last year's contest. Each family attending the event will receive one free calendar for their home.

"It's going to be featuring the lunar cycles, which is basically from the new moon, full moon, to the waning moon, and the fishermen and farmers to this very day within our local Chamorro culture still utilize the moon phases," Calvo said.

Lunar phases, guide our island's fishermen and farmers as to what to fish at certain times, as well as when to plant and harvest. The festival will also be celebrating Chamorro heritage through song and dance, local artisans, as well as local food cooked in a chahan - an underground oven - used by ancient Chamorros. "At the event we are basically encouraging all the participants to feature their Chamorro culture in language and in the works that they do as well as the natural resources," he said.

Make your way down to the Chamorro Lunar Calendar Festival, next Saturday January 17 at the Saggan Kottura Chamorro from 9-6pm.
