Arbor Day celebrated at Ypao

Guam - Things were a little greener down at Ypao Beach Park this morning as the Department of Agriculture hosted the Guam Arbor Day activities. Director Tita Taitague says the event focuses on the planting of trees and highlighting the need for reforestation efforts in Guam.

"We're here to impress the people that tree planting is very important because of the fact that if we don't have the trees, our island would not be as beautiful as it is. Plus trees bring so much benefit to our health and to our safety," she explained.

The event focused on Ypao Beach due to the recent loss of numerous coconut trees by the invasive coconut rhino beetle. While Arbor Day is observed nationally in April, on Guam it's scheduled in October during the rainy season to help ensure the trees have the opportunity to grow before the drier months in the beginning of the year.
