Guam - The Coast Guard 5K Obstacle Course "Run to Remember" is scheduled for this Saturday at Governor Flores Memorial Park, Ypao Beach. Show time for the run is at 5:00 am with go time set for 6:00 am. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the sacrifices that Coast Guard members have made in the form of scholarships. The scholarships help the surviving family members who have lost loved ones who have served in the Coast Guard.

Steven Knight/, Event Coordinator, said, "The run initially was an ultra marathon run, so it started off in a marathon in Florida and it went all the way down to the keys, Key West. That's a 100-mile run across a 7-mile bridge. It's very unforgiving and there are some peaks and valleys. The next year there was a lot more participation and then turned into a relay race so it was more of a baton style race and it was set up to go over 90 individuals and to go the entire length and that was in 2012. Last year in 2013 it kind of exploded, the previous year it went from just being in Key West and being in South Florida to being in Hawaii, Kuwait and it became a global competition."

Anyone interested in registering for the 5K can go to the Facebook page at Run to Remember Guam and do your part to help raise money for the Fallen Hero's Scholarship Fund. The cost is $10.00 pre race and $15.00 if you register the day of.

Nicole Tainatongo, Event Coordinator, said, "Well this is obviously not your typical 5K. It does involve obstacles, it not a 5K obstacle course but it's a 5K with obstacles in between it. So you won't be running the whole 5 kilometers with obstacles from start to finish but there are some obstacles in between so it is a lot of running but it's also a lot of ups and downs and you will be running through the water so bring the proper shoes for it and just be ready for anything. We are giving out t-shirts to the first 150 registrants and then the first place male and female to complete the obstacle course will get an awesome ammo can that has been made by one of our officers from work and he put some stuff and special goodies inside so it's a special prize for those who complete it first."
