Guam - Hoping to send a strong message out to criminals, Governor Eddie Calvo signed a pair of bills that would protect those that are most vulnerable in our community. Senator Brant McCreadie's Bill 272 establishes the Vulnerable Victims Act of 2014 whereas Senator Aline Yamashita's Bill 273 would update the penalties for criminals who invade our privacy.

McCreadie said, "I think its not only important to preserve the safety of our people so they live a better quality of life but we inspire them and help them move forward by protecting them," with Yamashita adding, "Once upon a time it was a misdemeanor, now its a felony so anyone decides they can take pictures, and put it over the internet, they shall not and if they're indicted and found guilty you just can't do that and in today's world people believe they can do that."

Both Chief of Police Fred Bordallo and Chief Prosecutor Basil O'mallan were on hand to show their support. Meanwhile, the Governor's Office tells KUAM that Senator Tom Ada's Bill 283 relative to updating the port's master plan was vetoed. The bill passed straight down party lines with all Republican senators voting against it. As we reported, port general manager Joanne Brown had urged Governor Calvo to veto the measure as she accused the oversight chair was trying to micromanage the port.
