Guam - The Lotus Surf Kids Competition was held down at Talofofo
Bay Surf Side Beach. 48 competitors ages 5-14 years old took part in the
competition for a chance at winning some great prizes.
Fred Mendiola, Event Coordinator, said, "Our intentions first
was to have the kids come down here and surf together and make new friends and
get a basic competitive experience. Kind of like the basic fundamentals of
going into a surfing competition and this spot Talofofo Bay Surf Side is just
so nice for surfers of every level because the bottom is sand. And the currents
are not as hazardous as being out there on the coral reef and it's really close
to the beach. It is also nice because the family is able to come out and watch
and they are about 100 yards away from their children while the children are
surfing and they are relaxing in front of the beach."
Austia Mendiola took first place for girls ages 11-14 and said it
was fun to be out there surfing with friends.
Austia Mendiola said, "You can compete or you can have fun,
all of it is for fun and when you are in the water you just think about you and
mother nature and the wave. It's a really fun sport and people everywhere
should try surfing and I'll bet they would love it."
Jake Policastro, the Boys 11-14 Winner, said, "Well surfing
is really fun and when I see a wave and if it's going to break you don't go for
it but if it looks in the right spot you go for it. You have to practice
holding your breath and your abilities in the water so you don't get into
trouble or anything."
