Last of drug co-defendants makes court appearance

by Krystal Paco

Guam - The last of twelve co-defendants named in a major drug distribution ring appeared via video teleconference at the District Court.

During his arraignment this morning, Eder Cortez-Zelaya pleaded not guilty to charges relative to receiving large sums of cash in exchange for crystal meth.

Although appointed attorney Mike Phillips was present for the hearing, he asked the court give him more time to decide if there are potential conflicts due to others named in the case.

Because Cortez-Zelaya was not able to afford to come to Guam for the hearing, the court will allow him to stay in Nevada until further notice on conditions that he not possess a firearm and submit to drug testing.

He will appear again via video teleconference on April 16.

Jury selection and trial has been set for June 17.
