Guam - Department of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is in the Asia-Pacific region. He landed in Japan Saturday and met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. According to Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby "the two leaders discussed a range of regional security issues, to inlcude recent provocations by North Korea, Chinese maritime claims and military activities, and the need for a continued focus on dialogue and cooperation between the U.S., Japan and the Republic of Korea.". Kirby added "Secretary Hagel reiterated the strong support of the United States for Japanese efforts at defense reform. He also thanked Minister Abe for the support of the Japanese government in securing last December the landfill permit for the Futenma Replacement Facility."
This is Hagel's fourth official trip to the Asia-Pacific region. There is no word on whether he will be stopping through Guam. Meanwhile President Barack Obama is reportedly expected to visit Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Malayasia in late April.
