Pre-trial conference held for Chad Desoto

by Sabrina Salas Matanane

Guam - Chad Desoto appeared in the Superior Court of Guam this morning for a pre-trial conference. His trial is scheduled to begin in early June and expected to run three to four weeks. During today's hearing the defense raised concerns about security due to the high profile nature of the case as well as scheduling conflicts to get experts on island for the trial. A hearing has been scheduled for April 30th for the defense to return with a schedule of availability of experts.

Desoto is accused of driving a car down a sidewalk in Tumon in February 2013. He ran over several tourists in his path. He eventually got out of the car and began stabbing people. Three people died and eleven others were injured. It's estimated there will be over 130 witnesses 12 of which are witnesses from Japan. Likewise several defense expert witnesses will be flown in for the trial scheduled for June 9th.

Desoto has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness, disease or defect. He has undergone two separate psychological evaluations, but the findings are not available to the public.
