Santa Barbara students celebrate Chamorro Month

by Krystal Paco

Guam - Hundreds of students from Santa Barbara Catholic School got out of the classroom and spent the day at Ypao Beach celebrating Chamorro Month. Students were treated to chants from Simon Sanchez High School students, Chamorro music from Jesse & Ruby, lessons from master carvers and blacksmiths and more.

Santa Barbara principal Janet Pangelinan said, "Instead of just staying at school we wanted to bring the kids close to the ocean and the environment is perfect. We want to teach our kids about pour culture and who we are as a people of the Marianas." And music and language arts teacher Karl Cepeda added, "Every opportunity that we can find that teaches them in a different way, exposes them to different cultures and different environments, it helps them learn and we think it's a wonderful opportunity."

This year's theme is Plant The Seeds Of Our Heritage Among Our Children.
