Guam - The annual Quality Cup has been held since 2006, bringing high-competition talent from the region and throughout Asia to Guam. George Lai is tournament director and participant, and says that the caliber of the play has increased dramatically, at all levels and across all divisions.
He told KUAM Sports,"The level of play is definitely getting higher because of the more participation and the better coaching around now. And on top of that, we have visitors from off-island who come and play with us. For example, we have a few groups that came over from Saipan, and then this weekend we have some people coming in from Japan, and then next weekend we have some people coming from Hong Kong, as well. "
Lai says that the local conditions present a challenge for the visiting competitors, but that they modify their games to make do, adding, "The local players certainly have the advantage since we're used to the sun and the heat and the humidity. But the off-island players have their own way to adapt, and some of them come in a few days early and adapt."
The tournament also gives local players the chance to compete on their home turf against other pros, and provide non-stop competitive play, which is more akin to events elsewhere.
