EOD conducting exercise at Channel 10

Posted: Updated:

The Naval Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Flight is scheduled to perform a render safe procedure (RSP) after a hiker found a 5-inch US Navy round yesterday at around 2:30 p.m. at Turner Rd. (Channel 10).

The RSP will be conducted at approximately 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2013.

Because the projectile has a sensitive fuse, it will require it to be rendered safe by blowing it up in place before removal is possible. The UXO will remain in place until the RSP time.

As a safety precaution, Turner Rd. (Channel 10) will be closed off to all residents. Residents within the village of Nimitz are NOT in danger as village homes are well outside the maximum fragmentation arch. HOWEVER, persons hunting or hiking near the Turner Rd. jungle area could be in danger of injury in the case of an unanticipated detonation.
