DOE confident schools will open August 19

by Krystal Paco

Guam - With less than a month until the start of classes, Department of Education superintendent Jon Fernandez releases his weekly update on school readiness.

Major highlights include progress in the deep cleaning of classrooms including stripping and waxing of floors and the completion of student schedules.

On the to-do list, Fernandez reports the need to fill remaining teacher positions, especially at an elementary school level, dispose of debris and equipment on school grounds, and work with the Guam Fire Department to conduct final inspections on schools and fire alarm systems.

Meanwhile, the Adopt-A-School Program is in full swing with GovGuam agencies addressing campus repairs, water blasting, and painting.

Although he remains confident schools will open August 19th Fernandez invites community partners to fund or assist with campus improvement projects. If interested, call deputy superintendent Rob Malay at 300-1275 or email rhmalay@gdoe.net
