Guam - The Guam Power Authority reports that as of nine o'clock Thursday evening power was restored to 85% of the island. According to a press release from GPA, preliminary findings indicate the cause of the outage was from a fuel pump leak in the MEC operated generator at Cabras. ""MEC's protection scheme tripped the generator and the subsequent instability in the system caused an island wide blackout. The system is designed to protect against prolonged instabilities by shutting down to minimize equipment damage," the press release stated. GPA still estimates that power should be restored to the entire island before midnight. The agency also appreciates the patience of rate payers. Additionally, a full investigation into today's island-wide power outage is currently underway.
