35 ft sperm whale found on reef at Turtle Cove in Yona

GUAM - It was an unusual sight off the shores of Turtle Cove in Yona today. What appeared to be a giant rock on the reef was in fact a 35-foot dead sperm whale. NOAA fisheries was notified by the Navy's  HSC-25 that the marine mammal was beached on the reef yesterday afternoon. Department of Agriculture, NOAA, and custom officials were on site today to conduct the initial assessment.

Department of Agriculture biologist Brent Tibbatts explained, "I'd like to remind people that something like a sperm whale like this a couple of things. Whales can carry diseases that can be transmitted to people so they absolutely should not try to touch it or anything and also they are an endangered species so taking any pieces of the whale is highly illegal both local law and federal law."

While there are no obvious signs of cause of death, samples of the remains are being taken and will be sent off island for further evaluation.
