Guam - The island's public high schools noticed a new face on
campus today. Superior Court of Guam acting deputy chief probation officer Melanie
Brennan says five newly trained school resource officers were deployed to the
schools today. Every high school with the exception of Okkodo now has two of
the law enforcement officials on campus.
Brennan says the SROs are trained in basic officer survival,
active shooter situations, judicious use of force or when to use their baton
and pepper spray as well as a firearm, and basic report writing.
Brennan says the SRO program is proving successful as surveyed
students say they feel safer with the law enforcement officer on campus all
day. Despite heated debate when the SRO program was introduced last year, SROs will
not carry firearms while on school grounds.
