Guam - The Port Authority
of Guam's contract with its employees and the Guam Federation of Teachers may
not be a done deal. It was earlier this month when the port board signed a contract
for its employees with the Guam Federation of Teachers. However, concerns
raised by the Department of Administration could impact the contract from being
implemented.
DOA director Benita Manglona expressed concerns in a letter to
port management that there are questions about whether or not 50% of the port's
current eligible employees are members of the GFT. In the letter, it's noted
that as of October 31 last year, membership had decreased to 80 out of 213
eligible employees representing 38 percent membership.
Port general manager Mary Torres did not want to comment on
matters in question, only telling KUAM News that the board did act in concurrence
with legal counsel's advice when moving forward in signing the contract. Torres
isn't sure if the board will take any further action on the concerns when it
meets next week.
