Guam - The Department of Corrections
provided an update on the status of their efforts to comply with a decades-old
consent decree. The department has struggled for years to close the books on
the case.
Updates were provided on the department's generator project, the
electronic locking and unlocking system, the hiring of a new doctor and new
nursing staff and updating and improving the department's medical policies.
The federal government's consultant was concerned that the
documented standard of care did not comply with policy and resulted in
prisoners suffering negative health consequences, including serious illness and
death.
Another status hearing has been set for May 21 of next year.
