Guam - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is in the region, but isn't
scheduled to stop on Guam. He is currently on
his way to Australia but
stopped in Hawaii
where he participated in a ceremony opening a new memorial for the Vietnam
War. Aboard a military aircraft en route
to Perth,
Panetta said DOD's strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific Region is a long-term
effort that is beginning to show tangible progress. A part of that strategy as
we've been reporting is the relocation of Marines from Okinawa,
Japan to Guam.
In Australia,
Panetta will meet up with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The two are
attending ministerial consultations between the two countries. Meanwhile, Panetta said President Barack
Obama is expected to visit the region next week.
