Guam - It's more than parks the Department of Parks and Recreation oversees, but cemeteries, too. According to DPR director Pete Calvo, a resolution was passed at Friday's meeting to review all 22 cemeteries to check for compliance and capacity.
Calvo says cemeteries like Tiguac Cemetery have began vault burials, which are not specifically approved by public law. "We want to do a complete assessment of cemeteries on Guam. Cemeteries are part of parks so we want to make sure they're in compliance. And then do an inventory and see whether we have the capacity to meet the future needs," he said.
Calvo says DPR is working with engineers to certify a design to use vault design for any future above ground burials. The agency is also noticing cemeteries are overextending boundaries.
