Guam - The 2012 Monster Energy Surf the Basin Surfing and Body
Boarding Contest takes place this Saturday at Boat Basin.
This year's event will have a gender-neutral open surfing for short board,
gender-neutral open long board surfing, men's open body boarding, women's open
body boarding and a gender neutral juniors surfing categories.
Willi Byerly with Guahan Napu told KUAM News, "It will be
from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm with sign up taking place on Friday night from 5:00 pm
to 8:00 pm at the pavilion right next to the Statue of Liberty Park. We are
looking for a good turn out and the weather looks like it's going to provide
some nice waves and hopefully the winds will be kind of off shore and there
should be some sun contrary to what it is now. The categories will be pretty
much all gender neutral. We have short board, long boarding and juniors and
that will all be gender neutral. We don't really know how many women are out
there; we had a meeting earlier this month and nobody showed up. But we are
having body boarding for women and also body boarding for men."
With the help of sponsors like DOCOMO, Fokai Amphibious Division,
the Fishermen's Co-Op local competitors will continue to get a chance to better
their skills and showcase their talent.
Byerly added, "We have good prizes; we have surfboards for
all the surfing categories and new body boards for all the body boarding
categories. We would like to thank Monster for being there for us for the
fourth year in a row. We have all the surf shops; Primo, DNA, Lotus and they
are bringing in Arnett sunglasses, Rip Curl, Da Kine, Tumon Lobster and Grill,
Proa. So we have plenty of good prizes and the cost is $30.00 because we are
now paying our judges to ensure the quality of judging is at the optimum."
