Guam - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released the following statement today as Palau celebrates almost 20 years of independence:

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Palau on the 18th anniversary of your independence this October 1.

For over 60 years, the United States and Palau have enjoyed a close and special relationship founded upon respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Our two countries have consistently worked together to promote democratic values and peace and security, not only for Palau and the Pacific region, but around the world. The service and sacrifice of Palauans as valued members of the U.S. Armed Forces is a testament to our close partnership and mutual commitment to a brighter future.

The United States stands with you as a partner and friend. We look forward to continuing to work together to promote our shared values in the coming year.
