Guam - Amid concerns from
the Mayors Council of Guam earlier this week and the deadline to submit
comments on Prop 'A' approaching, the Guam Election Commission's board of
directors approved the 500-word in-partial summary for the initiative favoring
for-profit gambling that would be published in a pamphlet.
Commissioner Martha Ruth raised two questions that should this
initiative pass, could their be legal challenges and if there were any
provision in the initiative that would cause the bingo facility at the former Guam
Greyhound to stop non-profit bingo activities. Legal counsel Jeff Mootes noted
that based on his reading of the initiative, it only allows for the bingo
facilities on the Greyhound property and has no impact on the non-profit bingo
activities.
The GEC meanwhile has yet to receive comments for or against the
initiative whose deadline is on September 22. And speaking of deadlines the
deadline to file candidacy to fill two seats on the Consolidated Commission on Utilities
and six seats on the Guam Education Board was today.
The two individuals filed candidacy for the CCU, which Joey Duenas
and Pedro Guerrero. For the GEB, six have filed including Ron Ayuyu, Maria
Gutierrez, Peter Alexis Ada, Jose Q. Cruz, Albert San Agustin and Lourdes
Benavente. The GEC will spend the weekend verifying candidacy packets and will
inform those in the running if they've been certified on Monday.
