Guam - Our men's national
soccer team, Matao earned the right to move on in the East Asian Football
Federation East Asian Cup preliminary round. Matao picked up the 3-0 win over Macau yesterday afternoon at the Leo Palace Field. With
the win our men's team will compete in Hong Kong
in December where the East Asian Cup will be held.
Team Captain Jason Cunliffe provided the spark early in the match
on a header that got by Macau's keeper. Marcus
Lopez added to Guam's lead assisted by
Cunliffe minutes later. Matao's last score of the game came from Zachary
Deville late in the second half for the 3-0 win.
Jason Cunliffe said, "Wow, what a game. We went up 1-0 off a
quick goal, a cross and a header and I scored. Marcus gave us a 2-0 lead 20
minutes in and from there they were on their heels. They could have tied to
advance we had to win and after we had our 2-0 lead the pressure was on them.
They made it tough in the second half and we got the late third goal to top it
off but boy was it tough. It went down to the wire and we are excited to
advance and get ready for Hong Kong. We are
going in December and we thank everyone for their support, we did it all for
you Guam, so thank you for everything, we love
you all and it feels great."
