Guam - A convicted drug
dealer and former police officer who has been in federal prison for the last 15
and a half years is now a free man. Anthony Ascura appeared in the District
Court to be re-sentenced after his criminal conspiracy to import methamphetamine
and heroin charge was vacated. In 1996
he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for drug trafficking.
Federal Public Defender John Gorman asked that his client be
released from prison since the time his client has already served is justified
and appropriate. He also detailed Ascura's
extensive post-sentencing rehabilitation, his previous military service and
accolades and his strong family support.
Ascura was released this afternoon and will spend a couple
years on supervised release.
