Guam - Hundreds, if not thousands, of cans and bottles are consumed during the Super Bowl and although many may be more focused on their team, you too can be environmental stewards during the biggest game of the year. Governor Eddie Calvo proclaimed every Wednesday as Green Day and although the Super Bowl falls on a Monday, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy your game and recycle too.
If you're having a Super Bowl gathering at your house or you're a bar owner showing the game, iRecycle program administrator Peggy Denney says you should start by setting up separate bins for people to put their beverage containers - many of which can be recycled. "I mean it's fairly easy to do, It's not rocket science, just set up bags, boxes, trash bins, identify them, make simple little labels for aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, steel cans and just throw them in there, you want to make sure that they're empty," she said.
Aluminum cans and plastic bottles can be dropped off at Pyramid Recycling in the Harmon Industrial Park. The plastics accepted are only Plastics Is and IIs, which can easily be identified by looking for the triangular Recycle logo underneath the bottle. She advises to also take off the cap and throw it away. "Aluminum is a very valuable recyclable, it can be recycled over and over and over, so I encourage people to recycle it through the schools," Denney continued. "You can do that one of two ways, you can take it directly to the school of your choice or you can bring it to pyramid at the first entrance and you can say these cans are for such and such a school."
If you are going to donate it to a school, she advises that you don't crush them as schools are paid through the iRecycle program based on volume. Pyramid doesn't accept glass bottles, but there is an alternative site, as Denney said, "Glass is a little more challenging but we can do something with it, you can take it to the Dededo Waste Transfer Station and that's on Batulo Road just passed prestige auto and there's an open rolloff and you can dump all your glass in there."
By setting of goal of zero waste or pretty darn near, you too can have a winning team come Super Bowl Monday. Peggy says you can give her a call at 483-9415 if you need help recycling.
