Halfway house inmate escapes for 3 hours

Guam - A 33-year-old inmate, who was going to be released in 46 days, escaped from the Department of Corrections early Saturday morning in a DepCor community work detail truck.  His escape didn't last long as he led police on a high speed chase just a few hours later and crashed.
Xavier Tedtaotao had just been moved to the halfway house earlier this week.

DepCor Spokesperson Lieutenant Antone Aguon says around 1:00am, the lone officer assigned to the halfway house did a head count and found Tedtaotao unaccounted for.  Police located the inmate on the road near King's in Harmon where a high speed chase ensued.  Tedtaotao
eventually crashed and was apprehended.  He now faces at least 3-5 years behind bars.

Lieutenant Aguon says Tedtaotao's parole was revoked last year.  An internal affairs investigation is now underway into the escape as well as how Tedtaotao was able to gain access to the DepCor vehicle.

KUAM in the meantime also spoke with Depcor Director Jose San Agustin, who says the lone correction officer who was on duty at the halfway house at the time of the escape as well as the inmates who were there are being questioned.  San Agustin adds the preliminary investigation indicates Tedtaotao recently learned of a death in the family this week.

He added, " These inmates at the half way house are suppose to be trusted persons of the facility. Unfortunately there are times when they are not reliable. We can't underestimate that if inmates have personal problems involving their family that there isn't a possibility of escape. "
