Guam - The 10th Annual Strides for the Cure 2K & 5K Run/Walk takes place this Saturday at the Outrigger in Tumon. The annul event helps raise funds to battle the disease and encourages the island community to help reduce the risk of getting cancer.
Event coordinator Donna Baker said, "We have been running this race for ten years out of the Outrigger and it's the same course that we did last year all the way down to Ypao and back. You can register at Hornet or DNA and go time is at 6:00 am show time is at 5:15 am. We love our sponsors they have taken real good care of us with great raffle prizes and two round trip tickets to Okinawa, United is taking care of that. Also in the goodie bags this year we have two tickets to the Li Na La Cultural Park, which is great so people can check out Guam's culture on display, Hot Diggity Dog certificate, Haagen-Daz certificate, $5.00 for DNA and a power bar from Kellogg's. This year we are doing something different with our race t-shirt, we are actually doing a v-neck race t-shirt, which we are real, excited about."
The ditty bags will be given out to the first 2,000 finishers and overall winners from the 5K will receive a one-night stay at the Outrigger Guam Resort. Food, light refreshments and drinks will be provided at the finish line along with medals for all children 2K finishers.
Baker said, "Our focus is on preventing cancer, we would love it if there were never any cancer but we know that is not realistic so our goal is to educate the youth and focus on the youth and teach them healthy life style choices. Because when they make those healthy lifestyle choices then they can reduce their risk of cancer up to 70 percent. One of our pilot programs last year was with Machanaonao School and we sponsored the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to do a spirit day where we encourage them to get physically active and every single person in class participated in some kind of sport to promote the excitement of physical activity with the kids."
