Guam - With only five ambulances operating today, Public Safety Oversight Chair Senator Adolpho Palacios recommends an investigation be done for the 15% special pay the Guam Fire Department gets for being EMT-certified. He alleges abuse by firefighters getting the extra pay when not working on the medics.
"This appears to be inconsistent, the compensation for medic pay versus the availability of ambulances on a daily basis, they just don't jive and to start examining and requiring documentation," he said.
However, GFD Acting Spokesperson Captain Ed Flores says hours worked are justified, adding the firefighters are rotated each shift to work on the medics available. Although Senator Palacios did not have a list of names of firefighters receiving the EMT pay, he did provide a list of positions that are receiving the specialty pay ranging from Firefighter Is to captains.
