Guam - From 32 charter members to over 1,500 today, the Guam National Guard spoke of its 30-year history and future plans in front of Rotarians today. Guam National Guard Director of Operations Lieutenant Colonel George Charfauros says as the smallest and youngest guard unit in the U.S. inventory of the National Guard, he is proud of its contribution to the island and nation's defense in the three decades.
"We have a federal mobilization coming up on the army side of the National Guard, which encompasses about 800 of our soldiers who have been notified of a possible and intending alert for deployment to Afghanistan in 2013. Beyond that, in five or six years, we're excited to be getting medevac helicopters and my boss Major General Paulino is excited about that," he explained.
Charfauros adds that these two UH-72 medevac helicopters are needed for Guam and its surrounding areas.
