Guam - Local boy Jared Matanane was here on island enjoying time with friends and family before he left back to California to continue his wrestling career. He attends Ontario High School and has been wrestling there for 4 years. Jared finished his junior year 36-8 and was undefeated at 7-0 his senior year before being injured.
Jared earned a scholarship this year and will be attending Mount San Antonio in the Golden State, where he will resume his wrestling. He told KUAM Sports, "I went to a tournament and some of the coaches were there and I used to wrestle up at the college just for practice and they told me that they wanted me to wrestle for their school. Their wrestling team is pretty good and they consistently have All-Americans from there and I feel pretty good, I've been wrestling with some of the college guys and I've been doing pretty good against them."
Matanane was team captain and placed 8th in one of the biggest tournaments in California at 160 pounds. He was 2nd in his section and ranked 4th in Southern California. He's come a long way from his freshman year in high school where he didn't win any matches to now hopefully being a collegiate champion or one day a gold medalist representing Team Guam.
"I've been wrestling a lot of freestyle out there in California and been doing pretty well so I hope I can do good out here and become an All-American and then transfer out to a bigger college so I can go NCAA Division I and just go as far as I can," he said.
