Guam - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Surgeon General Rear Admiral Eric Broderick is on island meeting with the Pacific Behavioral Health Collaborating Council. The Council includes leaders in mental health and substance abuse prevention from Guam, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa and the Marshall Islands.
Broderick is also the deputy administrator for SAMHSA. According to the PEACE Office, the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association has declared a regional state of emergency on non-communicable diseases in our region. Officials say the meetings highlight collaborative efforts to strengthen behavioral health and primary health care programs, policies, and practices within the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands.
The regional meetings began today and continue through the week.
