Guam - "Everyday Heroes" is the theme of National Emergency Medical Services Week, which runs from May 15-21. It is during this week that we recognize EMS workers.
Guam Fire Department Fire Captain Darren Burrier told KUAM News, "EMS Week is a time of year that we spend a week recognizing the people who contribute to EMS bringing awareness to the public and what emergency medical services is." To kickoff the week, booths and displays were set up at the center court of the Agana Shopping Center.
Burrier continued, "We have different contributors of the EMS system such as Public Health nurses, private medical transport companies, GFD's Advanced Life Support Unit along with the Rescue Unit, showing static displays of the equipment and make those more aware."
Aside from booths, various individuals were recognized for their contribution to the community. He said, "We've done some recognition of EMS providers, giving them recognition in their EMS vision, their exceptional performance and courage under fire and giving them that recognition and how they've been able to give the best service to the people of Guam."
Capt. Burrier says that throughout the whole week, there will be different activities held including a picnic and a run/walk. He was also happy to report that GFD recently graduated more than 20 additional EMT intermediates that will be able to offer care to critical patients.
"We're happy to have them providing advanced care to the people who need it," he explained.
