Guam - On Sunday, US and Japan Coast Guard coordinated the rescue of 27 fishermen after a fire forced them to abandon ship of Guam. Japan Coast Guard received notification from the Daichi Shoei Maru that it was on fire.
A request from the Japan Coast Guard was relayed to rescue coordinators at Sector Guam for assistance. The Coast Guard Cutter Washington, homeported in Guam, and a C-130 Hercules airplane from Air Station Barbers Point Hawaii were launched to assist.
The crew abandoned ship moments before it suffered several explosions.
