Guam - The Guam Election commission board this afternoon selected Maria Pangelinan as the agency's new executive director. This is the first time in history the GEC has a woman as its leader.

After a unanimous decision members stated how challenging the selection process was, as they say all top three applicants were well qualified for the job making it a difficult decision to make. Pangelinan is currently detailed to the office of the executive director at the Guam Legislature where she is serving as the senior accountant.

She is also a part time professor at the University of Guam in the school of business. Board vice chairperson Alice Taijeron is hopeful their pick will begin addressing all of the current GEC issues as well as prepare for next year's election. Pangelinan was selected over Teresita Robeto Cruz and Naomi Lujan Gonzalez.

Pangelinan tells KUAM News she is very passionate about the job and she applied for the position, she says to make sure the real voice of the people is heard. Pangelinan says she is now a student of the GEC, as she learns the ropes of the agency. She also wants to ensure the agency's laws and standard operating procedures are up to date.

Pangelinan is humbled that she was selected and says she will now work on conducting an agency wide assessment. The position was left vacant earlier this year after former director John Blas stepped down for personal reasons.

The board is scheduled to meet on April 20 at 4pm where they will continue discussion regarding the selection of their independent board member.
