Firefighters rally at Guam Legislature

Guam - More than seventy-five firefighters sat inside the Legislature's Public Hearing Room holding a peaceful protest hoping to persuade lawmakers to reconsider the nomination of Acting Chief John Salas. His nomination was referred back to committee after several senators expressed doubt he could lead the agency.

Captain Rueben Olivas said, "They [senators] are entitled to their opinion, unfortunately they didn't listen to the firefighters who they spoke to. We know Chief Salas better than anybody and we worked with him for years before he retired, and if they would have listened to us he constituents, they would've voted for him but they didn't do that."

Salas says he also plans on sending letters and personally contacting the senators requesting they reconsider his nomination. Salas' appointment expires on April 4.
